Ordinary is a dance-theater performance created by Atsushi Takahashi and Tomoya Kawamura.
The piece takes “the everyday life; Ordinary” as its central theme, exploring the nature of daily life and the moments when this seemingly unshakable normalcy is suddenly taken away.

Spanning different historical and contemporary periods, including the societal shifts of the year 1933.
The devastation of war, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami (often simplified as “Fukushima”), and today’s society—this work draws inspiration from testimonies, literature, and poetry of those who lived through the loss of everyday.

Through a fusion of dance and theater, it poses a profound question: What is the meaning of the ordinary to us all? The project seeks to illuminate the boundary between everyday life and its collapse, bringing to the stage the fragile line where the ordinary disappears—and what lies beyond it.
We are living in an increasingly unstable and precarious era. As someone who is Japanese yet also a foreigner, it is not easy for me to take sides.
But the message we want to convey is clear:

“We must not repeat the same mistakes.”

Those mistakes are what have the power to suddenly take away the irreplaceable experience we call the Ordinary—our everyday lives.
To protect what is ordinary, we must listen to the voices of those who have lost it. And we believe these voices must be shared—with the audience, the local community, and society as a whole.
